Smart-to-BIM: Applying Human-Centred Design to Data
A deep dive into the Smart-to-BIM revolution, focusing on human-centred design and transforming data into living assets.
The convergence of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Smart Building technology is transforming how we design, build, and operate assets. Yet, moving from static design data to a truly “living asset” requires a fundamental mind-shift—one rooted in human-centred design.
My expertise in engagement and business transformation focuses on facilitating the deep and meaningful conversations required to bridge these disciplinary divides. Through strategic connections, we can ensure that digital transformation serves not just the building’s systems, but its occupants and owners.
I recently facilitated a crucial panel discussion featuring Sam Norledge and John Clarke from the Digital Buildings Council (DBC), which explored this very convergence. They and other participants delved into the strategic implications of moving from siloed data to integrated digital environments. Drawing on my background in human-centred design, I provided editorial and framing expertise for the resulting article, ensuring it clearly articulated this vital mind-shift for the industry.
This is a powerful example of how applying a structured engagement approach and rigorous sense-checking can translate complex technical topics into clear, actionable insights for the entire ecosystem.
The full article by Sam, “The Smart-to-BIM Revolution: From Data Museums to Living Assets,” outlines the key takeaways from the panel discussion and the critical need to view BIM as the foundation for operational data.
